Living With Jesus

By November 16, 2012Church News

Dear church,

I am never without something to do. I have a family and friends, a job, a few email accounts, Facebook, Twitter, a cell phone, a growing stack of unread books, a house, a yard, two cars, and the laptop I’m typing this on. It’s not that I don’t relax; I do sometimes. It’s that even when I am relaxing there is something else that I could be doing. I assume you are the same way, but I am also assuming you think I am going to tell you that you should spend less time with those things and more time with truly important things. The truth is, I may or I may not.

In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus visits the home of Mary and Martha. Martha spends all of her time trying to be a good hostess while Mary sits with Jesus and enjoys His fellowship. Jesus knows Martha well and He lovingly tells her that Mary has chosen the right attitude for this specific occasion, but does that mean that we should drop any potential distractions and spend every moment reading the Bible at our kitchen tables? For most of us, no. For a few of us, the answer is still no, but you should do it more. For instance, if you’ve checked Twitter three times since you started reading this letter, that’s too much.

The account of Jesus in the home of Mary and Martha is not about worthwhile priorities verses foolish priorities, it is about choosing to live with Jesus in every moment. At times, you may be able to work in your yard or go on Facebook with a strong conviction of your sinfulness and a profound realization of God’s grace to you in Jesus, but most of us become distracted from those greater realities very easily. That is what Jesus called Martha away from, distraction not business (let’s be very clear that excessive business leads to distraction). This Sunday, we’re going to talk about living life with Jesus whether we’re at the kitchen table reading the Bible, at work, or around town. That’s the call of our lifetime and the gift of fellowship with Him. I hope you will make it a priority to be there for this important time together and message from God’s Word. I look forward to seeking Him together.

For the sake of His name,
